Hugo Martin Well this place was a mindfuck in a hand basket. He'd followed down the weird cavern looking areas and wound up here. The light was from the massive mushrooms that hung overhead, glowing in faint hues of pink, orange, and blue. The ferns laid out at his feet glowing in the same shades at their tips. While it was dark there was still ample light to see by, in fact, it was rather romantic looking. He was dragging a few smoked fish, something he'd cooked a while back in order to prep for the date he had planned. He'd told Varian about it a while back and they made plans to meet here away from prying eyes.
He found a spot underneath a mushroom in a pink tinted glow and set up camp.
He laid out the leaves he'd used to wrap the fish in and left it as a little meal. A few flowers decorated it nicely, just some wild ones he'd found growing on his way here that looked really neat. Of course he had the blue beetle, that was the main gift he was wanting to give to him after all. Now all he had to do was lie and wait for Varian to get his bird-footed ass over here so he could act like a charming gentleman and get him to accept the present.
PP permission was given by Alchemist for them to have previously discussed having a date.

VARIAN RUDDIGER Dates.
He didn't know why he'd accepted the idiot's invitation, he didn't know why he'd dropped his carefully crafted guard long enough to let him in like that. He didn't know the first thing about being on a date, even before waking up in this weird ass fever dream he'd never had any experience with dating or even having feelings for someone else. He didn't really have feelings for Hugo, or he was pretty sure he didn't have feelings for him...But if he didn't then why had he said yes? He made an annoyed sound in his throat, stupid charming piece of shit.
He could have just blown this off, he had better things to be doing than entertaining the notion that anyone might want to get to know him. It didn't matter, it wouldn't last anyway, Hugo would see that he wasn't a good or morally up and up sort of creature and he'd never have to listen to his dumb voice again. He deserved that, just being alone with himself was all he deserved.
He tried to shove those feelings down the closer he got to the place he'd been told to meet him, the scenery was interesting at the very least, all the glowing mushrooms and flora gave it an ethereal sort of feeling. He picked Hugo out easily, snorting in amusement. What an idiot, laying there waiting for him. He kept his eyes glanced to the side as he approached, looking unsure and a little lost, "I'm here, uh, Hugo..." He rubbed one of his bird feet over his other leg, shifting awkwardly before he came to sit close by, still firmly glancing away from him.

Hugo Martin When Varian showed up Hugo offered a charming smirk before getting up to offer Varian a seat at the little picnic he had set up. That's when he heard the stutter and saw the anxiousness behind the canines appearance. He scoffed, rolling his eyes playfully before giving a little stretch of his legs. So his date was a bit of a tough crowd, apparently a glowing mushroom forest with some free dinner and a present wasn't enough to impress, either that or he wasn't into material things, which Hugo could get behind if he was being honest.
"Wow then bird-brain, no need to be so excited." He deadpanned, laughing with a warm nature that seemingly came from a strange storage of sunshine he had in his body.
"Anyway, thanks for coming, certainly puffs up my ego." He laughed again, wagging his tail playfully.
He had to lighten the mood a bit, especially since his date seemed nervous for some reason. Had he never been on a date before? Strange, well, it wasn't like either of them looked like a normal version of their species. Oh well, it wasn't like he wasn't a champ at getting other people to laugh, or at least piss them off. He grabbed the beetle and showed it to Varian, placing it at his feet...paws? Feet? Fuck it, the two front legs of his freaky ass mutation.
"Got you a lil' something only a valiant hero like myself could obtain~" He chuckled and then had a seat on the opposite end of their little picnic.
"Anyway, go ahead and eat, took me a while to get this cooked so enjoy." He was smiling now, eating his own portion with about as much manners as he could muster without looking like a starved nightmare.
It wasn't like this part was hard, give a gift, eat some food, make conversation, hell maybe play some weird ass games with him. That would probably end mostly in annoying the bird-brain to death, yeah that sounded like fun. This date would be cool, it might actually end up fun if he did it right. Granted, it was just supposed to be for fun, not like he was asking the maned wolf to marry him, that'd be insane, right? Yeah, right...marriage was out of the question.

VARIAN RUDDIGER Varian only stood awkward and stiff for a few moments, seeming to not know what to do with himself, before he relented and came to sit beside Hugo, looking around before he leaned to sniff at the cooked fish, seemingly a little surprised, "you did this for me?" He finally asked, looking at him like he didn't believe for a second that anyone would put in so much effort for him. He didn't deserve it, he didn't deserve someone doing something nice for him. but Hugo had done this, and it was...Nice?
"Thank you, it's...Really nice." He offered his best attempt at a smile, which ended up looking awkward and toothy and like maybe he hadn't really smiled like this in a while. He couldn't wrap his head around it, couldn't fathom why anyone would ever want to do anything nice for him just because. Did he want something in return? Should have have brought something for him? His head sunk a little, "I-I didn't...Bring you anything, uh, I'm sorry..." He lifted a leg to rub at the nape of his neck, awkward, nervous, completely out of his element.
Blue eyes widened more at the beetle he placed at his feet, and he picked up it carefully, tilting his head, "fascinating," he gave another awkward attempt at a smile, "thank you," he sounded sincere this time, before tucking it safely in the little pouch slung across his shoulder, where he kept interesting things he found normally.
There was another moment of hesitation as he leaned down and sniffed at the fish, eyeing Hugo with a new bloom of suspicion as he started to eat. He could have poisoned this, it didn't taste weird at all, it was actually pretty good, he still could have poisoned it. Something tickled in his ear like a whisper and he gasped, stumbling to the side a little, "shut up!" He cried out, eyes darting around before resting on Hugo and realizing he had to look completely crazy, "uh, ah, I...Sorry..." He mumbled, getting back to his feet before leaning down to eat again, pausing for a moment before fixing Hugo with a dead serious expression, "this is poisoned, isn't it?"
