Battle Guide
Battle Setup
Here on Ebon fights can be a common occurrence and as a roleplayer there are a few things you need to do in order to properly initiate a battle! First are the stats that you need to put into your post initiating the fight. This includes the number of moves which is 1 - 7, there can also be a starting post at 0 so a character can give another one a chance to back down if that is something they would do. You must also include the spar type your body build, any talents or magical abilities you have, your dodges, your characters age, as well as a link to a log of how many battles you've been in. It should look something like this-
Character A vs Character B
Spar Type: -
Age: 2.00
Moves: 0/7
Time Limit: 3 Days
Body Build: Light/Average/Heavy
Talents: -
Elemental Branches - Light: 0/2 - Plant: 0/11
Unique Powers - Cloak: 0/1
Full Dodges: 0/1 (out of two if you have the agile talent)
Experience: Link to a spar log goes here
Now that all should be filled out with your character's information, the items above are just an example for you to follow. It should be placed at the bottom of your post and it should be tailored to your own situation. Once you have initiated the battle anyone can join in unless it is a battle to the death. Your opponent must respond within the time limit allowed with the same information or they will have defaulted in the spar.
So, what does all of that stuff mean? Well it's how well you're characters will do against each other.
Spar Type
This is the type of spar you'll be fighting. These are the currently allowed spar types-
Practice - This is a simple practice match, no serious injuries should occur here and is perfect for teenagers to develop their skills.
Dominance - This is a simple match, normally when someone has offended another character. No serious injuries should happen in these fights.
Territorial Dispute - This is a spar specifically for a Faction to defend their borders, these fights can range from vocal attacks such as "get out" or "go away" as well as physical attacks. No serious injuries should happen in this type of battle but it can be upgraded to a Maim battle if the offender does not leave.
ForceBreed - This is a serious spar in which a character is attempting to steal energy from another character. Once the fight is over, depending on who wins, the offender may steal the energy from another's soul stone and then proceed with the creation of children if the requirements have been met. These spars do not have to result in children and serious injuries may occur.
Hostage - This is a serious spar in which a character is attempting to imprison another character. Once the fight is over, if the party is captured they may try to escape 1 OOC week after capture. Serious injuries may occur and it may become a mixture of a Maim and Hostage spar type.
Maim - This is a serious spar in which a character is attempting to mutilate another character. These battles are often escalations of previous types of battles or can be considered a more intense version of a Dominance spar. Revenge would be a good cause of this type of spar.
Rank - This is a simple spar for a Rank in a Faction. Whether for Leadership or for a different rank inside of a Faction it all falls under this type of spar. These spars may not be upgraded to a Death type of spar and only moderate injuries should occur.
Death - This is the most serious spar here on Ebon, this is when a character is looking to kill another character. Staff, before the fight continues must look at the spar and make sure it has a valid reason for happening. This can range from taking revenge, defending yourself, or anything that fits the character attempting to kill the other.
Note that any character can submit! In order to submit type out your stats and then strike through them with the [.s][/.s] code without the .
The other party has the ability to accept the submission in order to end the battle there without a judge OR the other party may continue the fight in which case the submitting party can either try to run or continue to fight.
Moves
This is how many turns each roleplayer takes before the spar is over. Each spar starts at either 1, if the characters are not giving each other a chance to back down, or at 0 if both of them are giving each other a chance to back down. There can only be up to 7 moves total, but can be any number in between, a good one to start out with would be a 3 moveset.
Time Limit
This is how many days you have to respond. The challenger picks the moves, the defender decides the time limit. You as a challenger can decide to suggest a time limit in your first post, as that is how much time they have to respond to the original post before solidifying the time limit. Please be respectful to your partners, while there is no rule against making the time limit 1 day, it is inconsiderate as this does not allow for those who have restricted access to internet or have personal things to attend to in their personal life to respond in a timely manner.
Time Limits can be expanded on, just make sure to mention it either to Staff or in your next post.
Full Dodges
This is how many attacks you can fully dodge! Here on Ebon you can have 1 or 2 full dodges depending on your talents. This only allows you to fully dodge one attack, and this must be realistic. Your character can jump out of the way of a projectile, but if they are pinned to the ground they wont suddenly be able to jump away and turn around considering how quick fights happen. You cannot dodge both attacks if they are simultaneous, only one of them, more on that later though.
So you can dodge a swipe of claws or a bite so long as you are able to do so, during judging Staff will take a look and see if your reasoning is sound.
Experience
You can keep a spar log on your profile if your character is a fighter. If you link this log and you have been in more spars than your opponent you will get a bonus. A citizen isn't going to fair up against a military official in real life, so those who are more experienced will have a slight upper hand.
Battle Posts
Alright so now that you know how to set up a battle now you need to know what is needed in your posts! Your character must list all of these defenses somewhere in these posts. For example, "her ears were pinned and eyes narrowed, ready for an attack" lists two defenses. Feel free to underline them so Staff can clearly see them! Down below are lists of defenses for general creature types.
Felines -
Narrowed Eyes
Flattening Ears
Wrinkling muzzle to reveal teeth
Raising hackles for intimidation
Bending legs for balance OR widening their stance
Tucking tail (Cheetah) OR Flicking Tail OR Tail to used for balance

Now you need to understand how everything put together is supposed to look, an example post is below!
Snowball looked at Greenleaf with narrowed eyes and her wings outstretched, She may have been a slight raven but she was ready to fight until the end. Her legs tucked against her body as she dove to try and give a sharp peck to the foxes forehead. Simultaneously she attempted to use Shadow Talon on Greenleaf's back. Her goal was to try and make it so that the shadow magic would make it so that the fox would lose some feeling in his hind legs. Snowball vs Greenleaf Spar Type: Death Age: 5.50 Moves: 1/3 Time Limit: 3 Days Body Build: Light Talents: Agile Elemental Branches - Water: 8/11, Shadow: 8/11 Full Dodges: 0/2 Experience: Link to a spar log would be here |
That would be the attack part of a post, as personal feelings and thoughts of the character would also be added! This is the first post of an attack and her information is below and filled out correctly to her character!
A response to this is below!
Greenleaf wasn't about to back down either, he was a strong willed fox and even if he didn't like the idea of fighting he wasn't a pushover. When she dove towards him he tried to dodge, instead receiving the peck to his chest rather than his head, feeling blood trickle down. The pain stung since he'd essentially just had a puncture wound, even if shallow, open up on his collar bone, that and Durability had made it far more tolerable. He hadn't noticed the blade of shadow that came down upon his spine. His legs went numb with a pins and needle feeling. They shook, threatening to buckle beneath him. His widened stance not helping very much. He pinned his ears and narrowed his eyes, muzzle wrinkling to reveal his teeth. He wasn't going to back down now, not when blood had been drawn. He opened his mouth and lowered his head, ready to try and bite down on Snowballs right wing. His hackles were raised and his tail up in a dominant display. He didn't have any fancy magic to attack her with, so he was going to stick with what he was good at, his teeth and nails. Snowball vs Greenleaf Spar Type: Death Age: 3.75 Moves: 1/3 Time Limit: 3 Days Body Build: Average Talents: Agile, Durability, Stealth Full Dodges: 0/2 Experience: Link to a spar log would be here |
Time to dissect those posts!
So what were things you should have noticed in both posts?
First off the defenses were very clear in italics! If they're left out or missed it will count against you when a judge is having a look at the spar. An easy way to keep those organized is to use them as a checklist when writing!
Both of them had their stats listed in full! Everything that was applicable from above being used in their posts!
Both of them attempted to use an attack! They used key words like Attempt, Try, Aim, Goal.
If they had said that they would peck, they bit down, they used Shadow Talon and watched it sink into his back. Those kinds of phrases would have counted as a powerplay since it doesn't give the other roleplayer to respond, with more information on that in the individual post dissection!
Snowball's post dissection!
First she used a simultaneous move! She used a physical move and a magical move together, that is perfectly acceptable! The limit is two moves per spar post! Had she been a tiger she could have done two physical attacks like biting down and using their claws.
She again used an attempt, not assuming that her actions would hit 100% the way she imagined them.
She also gave a goal to the magic power! Adding goals of what your character is attempting to have happen shows conscious thought into what they're doing! It helps a Judge understand exactly what is going on and keeps the battle clear!
Finally she kept her power pool spread out, she used a level five power and applied it to both of her elemental branches because of how our power system works!

Greenleaf's post dissection!
First off he reacted to Snowball's attacks first! He reacted first to what they were doing, that is incredibly important since a battle follows posting order! The one who posts before you is the attacks that you have to react to first, so if character A attacks you and character B attacks you, then the reaction should be A and then B and then your attacks.
Secondly he moved! He moved his head when he saw the peck and instead took damage to the chest, this doesn't count as a full dodge since he still took damage. Had he moved and taken the peck to the tail it wouldn't have been possible considering how much time would have passed, since fights normally only take minutes rather than the days it takes to actually write them!
He also felt pain! He reacted and felt his body change due to pain! He was able to mediate it a bit due to his talents but he still reacted. Keep in mind your character feels pain just like you do, just imagine stubbing your toe and apply the same logic. If you need to google what a certain type of pain feels like feel free! It will help you in the long run!
Finally his bite, he made sure not to say that it was bone-crushing or anything of the like. It is a bite wound, now if he was able to latch on and continuously increase the pressure then the bone has the possibility of breaking, but that is up to the other party. As an attacker it still is an attempt and if the other party doesn't say it happens damage wise than it doesn't.
Anything that isn't logical during battle, such as a lioness breaking a bone due to a fennec fox bite, will count against a roleplayer during the judging part of the battle.

Now just to recap with a few things you really need to keep in mind when writing spar posts
1) Do not assume that your attack will hit, always write your attack as an attempt otherwise it will be counted as powerplaying, two counts of this in a spar on one parties side will end up in an automatic loss.
2) Do not edit a battle post, this will result in an automatic loss, make sure everything is just how you want it before posting
3) Keep your position in mind and clear, if you are behind a creature you wont be able to bite their face
4) Write the damage you've taken realistically, if you have broken a leg you wont be able to walk on it very well and it would be painful
5) Write your attacks realistically, your not going to break someone's leg in one bite no matter the species difference
6) Keep in mind when running away from a fight you must strike out your stats with a [.s][/.s] without the . as well as continue to list your defenses. Depending on the body type, size of character, and other items the Judge will decide if they have successfully escaped.
7) When you have had a battle and it has been finished without Staff intervention make sure to put in a Judge Request. For low risk spars such as Dominance and Territory disputes can be settled between roleplayers if they wish, but a Judge can have a look at these spars as well if either party would like.
Finally, when battling if Staff notices any Godmoding, Powerplaying, or Metagaming it will be an instant loss. It will also be an instant loss if any of the spar rules have been broken 2 times in a single spar. Staff will message you when we notice them to see if you would like to edit it since with our permission we will allow a few edits to be made. If you refuse or we are unable to get a response then the loss will be counted.
Good luck in your battles! If you have any questions feel free to contact Staff!
